On 4/1/2001 1, the vessel UTVIKEN (Official Number 726116) was involved in a striking - allision with a fixed object (striking - includes berthed/docked vessels) in HAMILTON HARBOUR NEAR PIER #23, ONT., ONTARIO (ON).
The vessel, with 24 persons on board, experienced the incident while engaged in regular operations. Fortunately, the ship was able to continue its voyage. No injuries or fatalities were reported, and there was pollution.
This incident was officially recorded by Transport Canada on 4/25/2001 . Weather at the time was reported as clear with winds from the N at 10.00 knots.
In daylight and clear weather with light winds, while proceeding toward Pier 23, Hamilton Harbour, the deeply laden bulk cargo Utviken, with a pilot on board and with tug escort, struck the tanker Hamilton Energy, and proceeded to strike and sink the tanker Provmar Terminal. Substantial damage was sustained by both tankers, while the Utviken suffered damage in way of the bulbous bow, which caused flooding in the forepeak tank. There was minor pollution as a result of this occurrence.
