On 06 September 2018, the halibut fishing vessel "HAIDA LEGEND", with 4 people on board began taking on water 22 nautical miles west-southwest of Langara Island, BC. It was beginning of the trip and all 4 crew members were on deck hauling the long line gear when the vessel began losing freeboard and its movements in the seaway became unusual.
The master went to the wheelhouse, where the high water alarm was sounding, and observed water accumulating below deck. He retrieved the survival suits, took them out to the deck, and ordered the crew to deploy the life raft and don the suits. The master then returned to the wheelhouse where he sent a Mayday call and retrieved an emergency pack containing flares, an emergency position-indicating radio beacon (EPIRB) and a very high frequency (VHF) radio.
All 4 crew members abandoned the vessel into the life raft and waited for help to arrive. Within approximately 20 minutes, the vessel had sunk. The “BUCKANEER BREEZE’ responded to the Mayday relay and recovered the 4 crew members within an hour. Approximately 1500 litres of diesel oil was reported to be on board the vessel. The cause of the ingress of water could not be determined.
