On 15 June 2018, the unlicensed 6.1 m aluminum fishing/harvesting vessel "C22761BC," known as “NUCHAHT,” with 5 people on board, took on water, capsized, and sank in Duffin Passage, near Tofino, BC. Two people on board who were not part of the crew managed to swim to shore. The Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) Search and Rescue conducted a search for the 3 crew, but they are still missing and presumed drowned.
On 14 June 2018, at approximately 2230, the crew suspended halibut fishing operations and returned to Tofino. The crew socialized at a local establishment until 0100 on 15 June. The 3 crew and 2 other people left the establishment and returned to the vessel where they socialized until 0230 and then departed the dock. At some point during a large course alteration, the vessel capsized. Everyone on board ended up in the water.
At 0306, the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre (JRCC) in Victoria received a report of persons in the water calling for help. No other distress call was received. JRCC tasked the CCG fast rescue craft Tofino 1. By 0422, the 2 people who were not crew had been located. The search for the 3 crew members continued until 2111, when the search was reduced and the case was turned over to the RCMP. The sea and weather conditions were not likely a factor and the cause of the vessel capsizing could not be determined.
